                                            Patient Education: Magnesium

Magnesium is recommended or prescribed by a healthcare provider based on current guidelines to address specific health needs, such as low magnesium levels or, in some cases, difficulty sleeping. While generally safe, all supplements and medications have potential side effects, so it is important to be informed about the risks and benefits. It is also helpful to understand how to reduce or manage side effects, and to know when to contact a healthcare provider or seek immediate medical attention. This guide is meant to empower you with that knowledge for a well-informed approach to your child's care. If you are still unsure, always reach out to your healthcare provider first.

                                            What is Magnesium?

                                            divider

Magnesium is an essential mineral the body needs to work properly. It helps hundreds of processes, including muscle and nerve function, a steady heart rhythm, blood sugar control, and building healthy bones. The body cannot make magnesium, so it must come from food or supplements. Magnesium also plays a role in the nervous system that may help the body relax, which is why it is sometimes used to support sleep.

When is Magnesium recommended for sleep in Children & Adolescents?

A provider may suggest magnesium as one option to help a child or teen who has trouble falling asleep, usually alongside healthy sleep habits. It is most often considered when simple sleep routines alone have not been enough and the family prefers to try a low-risk option.

It is important to understand what the research shows. The current evidence is limited and of low quality. Small studies in adults suggest magnesium may help some people fall asleep slightly faster (by roughly 15–20 minutes), but it has not been clearly shown to increase total sleep time. Major insomnia guidelines do not clearly recommend for or against it, and there is very little high-quality research on magnesium for sleep in children and teens. Because of this, magnesium is not a proven sleep treatment. Healthy sleep habits — a consistent bedtime, limiting screens before bed, and a calm, dark sleep environment — remain the foundation of good sleep. Magnesium should be given to a child or teen only when recommended by their provider.

What is the Dose of Magnesium?

The right dose depends on your child's age, weight, and the specific product. When magnesium is used to support sleep, our practice generally recommends magnesium glycinate, taken about 30–60 minutes before bedtime.

As a general starting guide (your provider may adjust this):

                                            • Ages 4–8 years: about 65–110 mg at bedtime
                                            • Ages 9–13 years: about 110–200 mg at bedtime
                                            • Ages 14 and older: about 200–350 mg at bedtime

These amounts are lower than the high doses used in a hospital setting. Do not adjust the dose or give more than directed, and never use an adult product or dose for a child without provider guidance.

                                            What are the possible side-effects?

Common Side-Effects (usually mild and dose-related):

                                            • Diarrhea or loose stools
                                            • Stomach upset, cramping, or nausea

Taking magnesium with food or lowering the dose often helps. These effects tend to improve as the body adjusts.

Less common side effects (seek medical advice, especially with high doses or kidney problems):

                                            • Flushing, drowsiness, or muscle weakness
                                            • Very low blood pressure, slow or irregular heartbeat, confusion, or trouble breathing — these are rare and usually linked to excess magnesium (call for emergency help right away)

When to get help: Contact your provider if side effects are bothersome or persistent. Seek immediate medical attention for severe weakness, confusion, fainting, a very slow or irregular heartbeat, or difficulty breathing.
